first_imgNewsHealthWork gets under way on 60 bed Univeristy Hospital Limerick unitBy Bernie English – April 3, 2019 989 University Hospital LimerickWORK has begun on the new 60-bed unit for University Hospital Limerick.A €2 million funding boost ahead of the publication of the capital funding plan has allowed hospital management to start groundworks in preparation for the main task of building the unit.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up The 60-bed unit is intended to take some of the pressure off finding beds for patients admitted through the busy emergency department. The works were started in a week when there were more than 70 people on trolleys in the emergency department on one day waiting for beds.No timeline has been set for the completion of the unit as the main body of the €19.5 million funding has yet to be officially confirmed although local politicians have said publicly that it will be part of the capital plan. It’s understood that the build will take up to a year, all going well and after that, the hospital will need to hire nursing and support staff and fit out the unit.A statement on behalf of the UL Hospitals Group said that a timeline for overall project completion could not be set until funding is approved for the main modular build contract itself.“Commencement of the enabling works is a significant milestone. It is accepted by all stakeholders that there is an imbalance in acute hospital bed capacity around the country. Delivery of the 60-bed inpatient block at UHL will begin to help us address our capacity issues in the MidWest,” the statement added. The Antidote to Hope is Action

first_imgHope. The very word suggests that one believes what they want is out of their control. Something unavailable to them without divine intervention. It suggests passivity and waiting. Hope and waiting are the twin diseases of the disempowered, those who believe they lack agency.Of all the strategies one might choose to produce better results, hope should not be one of them, least of all the reliance on a luck, or chance, or circumstances to unfold in a way that is favorable to you. Any strategy that requires that one do nothing but wish for what they want is to believe that reality in some way resembles a fairy tale. The antidote for the infection or the disease called hope is massive action. Hope indicates that you know what you want, and that is an excellent place to start – something many people haven’t yet figured out. Hope suggests that you have a goal of some sort, some sort of future state that finds you in a better position than the one in which you find yourself now. In the long history of success, hope’s role has been to disappoint those who rely on it for help.If there is something that you want, it is certain someone already has it. And because someone already has what you want, the strategies, tactics, and actions necessary to create it are well-known (and with equal certainty, books and courses are available to you). To hope is to ignore the strategies and tactics, and refuse to take the actions necessary to bring what you want in life. The energy you expel hoping, and being disappointed, is better spent doing what is necessary to have whatever it is you want.Good things don’t happen to you. They happen because of you. Lupita Nyongo Becomes Global Ambassador For Elephants

first_imgAcademy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has returned to her native Kenya and announced that she will advocate globally for elephants with international conservation organization WildAid, as well as promote women’s issues, acting and the arts in Kenya.Lupita Nyong’o visits The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi Elephant OrphanageCredit/Copyright: Kristian Schmidt/David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust via WildAid“I am proud of my Kenyan heritage, and part of that heritage is the incredible wildlife haven that is in our care,” she said. “I have come to realize that when you know more, you do more. I want to encourage people all over the world to learn more about these incredible animals. From reading a conservation website like to visiting one of the many, unforgettable, world-class national parks. I ask the world to end the current elephant poaching crisis by being ‘Ivory Free.’ It is time to ban sales of ivory worldwide and to consign the tragedy of the ivory trade to history.”Ms. Nyong’o spent time in Amboseli National Park with the Amboseli Trust for Elephants and at The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi elephant orphanage, meeting with local conservationists and filming messages for international distribution in Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, China, Hong Kong, Thailand and the United States. These messages are designed to raise awareness of the elephant-poaching crisis and to reduce the demand for ivory in consuming markets. Ms. Nyongo also met with Kenya-based African Wildlife Foundation and Save the Elephants who partner on these projects, as well as representatives of Wildlife Direct, and Ol Pejeta and Lewa Conservancies — all groups active in combatting poaching in Kenya.“Brave and dedicated people are giving their lives to protect our elephants,” Ms. Nyong’o said. “They need all of our support, from people in the United States and Asia by not buying ivory, and from Kenyans in supporting anti-poaching by reporting wildlife crime. Poaching undermines national security and endangers jobs and community support derived from tourism.”At a Tuesday press conference in Nairobi, film was shown of Ms. Nyong’o as a young girl singing for the elephants, as well as some highlights of her trip, which will later be used for television, radio, social media, newspapers, magazines and billboards with the message in Africa that “Poaching steals from us all,” and in Asia and the US that “When the buying stops, the killing can too.”Ms. Nyong’o joins a host of international icons including Jackie Chan, Yao Ming, Edward Norton, Prince William and David Beckham who are featured in the campaigns. WildAid and the African Wildlife Foundation plan to recruit more prominent Kenyans to join the campaign locally when it launches next year.Though Kenya banned the ivory trade 25 years ago, growing affluence in Asia has produced a new class of ivory consumers who have reignited demand and stimulated the illegal ivory trade, resulting in an escalating poaching crisis. Across Africa, up to 33,000 elephants are killed annually for their ivory, with militant groups and international criminal syndicates profiting from the trade.WildAid CEO Peter Knights said: “There has been a 50% increase in awareness of elephant poaching in China in the last two years, 95% of Chinese surveyed support a ban on ivory sales, and the government recently announced a phase-out of legal ivory sales. Kenya has passed new stricter laws and is cracking down through the courts. So there is some light at the end of the tunnel for elephants, and we hope Lupita can help us all secure their future.”Ms. Nyong’o’s homecoming tour is supported by a number of prominent local companies including Safaricom, Kenya Airways, Simba Colt Motors, African Heritage, Villa Rosa Kempinski, Seventh Sense Communications and luxury bag manufacturer Lulea.Click here to learn more about The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Nairobi Elephant Orphanage.Source:WildAidlast_img read more

Appbased cab service Zust Go with zero surcharge launched in Kolkata

first_imgKolkata: Amidst the alleged harassment of commuters over high surcharges in app-based cabs service, ‘ZustGo’, a new cab service with “zero surcharge” was launched here on Thursday. “We are not bothered about controlling the surcharge as we have decided to go without it. Our foremost concern is the safety of the passengers for which we have made provisions in our App,” said Kamaleshwar Singh, its founder and CEO. There have been large number of complaints from commuters here about the existing main app cab service providers Ola and Uber levying huge surcharge on fares during peak hours, and even in times of natural calamities. The resentment among the public has forced the West Bengal to suggest a cap on surcharge. About the existing security measures, Singh said: “The App has an inbuilt SOS button, which when pressed can alert five relatives of the traveller through Whatsapp and SMS, nearby Police station and also our office.” Also, there is a plan to install CCTV cameras inside the cars after getting all legal clearances. Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killed “We have planned to come up with ‘Go Bike Taxi’ by this Durga Puja. This one man taxi can be booked using the same App,” said Ranit Kumar Ghosh, Director. According to Singh, from Kolkata, the company aims to expand to the Tier-2 cities of West Bengal and finally the whole of Eastern India. They are aiming for pan-India expansion by 2022. Singh said though the Kolkata app cab market is dominated by the two major players, there was room for new rideshare service providers to grow due to low market penetration and high demand. The cab services provider said it would charge a reasonable price for four different categories – Regular (hatchback cars), Royal (Sedan), Prime (Luxury Sedan) and SUV. But he declined to give out the exact fares Another Director, Suraj Kumar Sethia said that they are launching their service with more than 3,000 cars but if there is demand, they can have a fleet of almost 20,000 cars. “Our team is working on a sustainable business model. Even the customer feedback will be of great help,” he said. The Indian rideshare, estimated at around $360 million in 2018, is expected to have a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20 per cent per annum to reach $761 million by 2022.A The current penetration of rideshare services in India is only 2.5 per cent, Singh added.last_img read more
