Atleti trail Barcelona by five points in La Liga but the cup could be Diego Simeone’s route to a trophy this season.Under Simeone the club have been fantastic in cup competitions, reaching two Champions League finals whilst winning the Europa League and the Copa del Rey.Girona have been one of the surprise packages of the Liga season with their star striker Cristhian Stuani outperforming everyone’s expectations in hitting 11 goals in 16 games this season.Since Girona were promoted to La Liga two seasons ago they have faced Atletico three times, with all three encounters ending in draws, so don’t expect this to be a one-sided match.Girona are currently going through their worst run of the season as they are winless in their last four games, however, their home record remains as strong as ever going unbeaten at Estadi Montilivi for the past five games.
Jozy Altidore’s second-half goal saw the United States overcome Panama 1-0 to complete a perfect group-stage campaign at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.Altidore’s overhead kick in the 66th minute gave USA a third win from as many games in Group D, securing top spot and a quarter-final clash against Curacao.USA made 11 changes to their starting line-up and it showed, but Altidore – having squandered two great chances earlier – stepped up to secure three points in Kansas City. While they were unconvincing, Gregg Berhalter’s USA did enough to complete the perfect group-stage campaign. With his 42nd career international goal, @JozyAltidore puts the #USMNT up vs. ! pic.twitter.com/dTjCUMubmR— U.S. Soccer MNT (@USMNT) June 27, 2019USA made a lively start as they pushed for an opening goal and it almost came through Altidore in the 16th minute. After Panama turned over possession, Jordan Morris played in Altidore, but the striker pulled his shot wide from an angle from inside the area.Altidore squandered another chance five minutes later, the striker putting a tame shot straight at Panama goalkeeper Jose Calderon after a Cristian Roldan cutback.Jonathan Lewis was denied by an excellent Fidel Escobar block, while Jose Fajardo fired wide for Panama on the counter-attack six minutes before half-time.Both teams struggled to begin the second half, leading to the introduction of USA star Christian Pulisic just after the hour-mark.The opener followed for USA after a corner as Altidore scored his 42nd international goal. The set-piece went uncleared and some poor defending from Panama led to Altidore producing an overhead kick from close range to make it 1-0.That was all USA needed, closing out a narrow victory as neither side created much of note in the closing stages. What does it mean? Job done for USAUSA simply needed to avoid defeat to secure top spot and the easier quarter-final clash, avoiding Jamaica. Berhalter’s side got the job done despite what was an unconvincing display.Changes could hurt USAUSA were beginning to find rhythm in wins over Guyana (4-0) and Trinidad and Tobago (6-0). Still, Berhalter opted to rest what is seemingly his preferred team and it remains to be seen whether that was the right decision.Altidore goal not enoughThe Toronto striker scored, but he also missed two chances in the first half. That is unlikely to be enough to earn him a start ahead of Gyasi Zardes, who has three goals at the tournament. What’s next? Both teams will play in Philadelphia on Sunday. USA take on Curacao, while Panama face Jamaica. read more
ATLANTA, GA – JANUARY 6: Head Coach Nick Saban of the Alabama Crimson Tide speaks to the media during the College Football Playoff National Championship Media Day at Philips Arena on January 6, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)Alabama is the best program in the country, but even Nick Saban has to deal with injuries. The linebacking corps has been a serious trouble spot for the Crimson Tide in the last few years. That situation got worse this week.Chris Allen is out for the season due to an ACL tear. Saban confirmed the injury during a press conference this afternoon.Saban says LB Chris Allen suffered a knee injury that required surgery and he’ll be out for the season, also confirmed RT Matt Womack stepped on somebody’s foot the other day & broke his foot again, will likely be out 4-6 weeks.— Alex Byington (@_AlexByington) August 18, 2018Allen was expected to be a key second-teamer for the reigning national champions. The news is not good for Alabama, but Nick Saban’s reaction to the Chris Allen injury is pretty fantastic.Even Alabama has depth issues, despite a seemingly-never ending wave of blue-chip players joining the program. Saban reminded us of that in an incredible manner.Saban on injuries: “You all just think that every time something happens, we just shit another player…”— Cecil Hurt (@CecilHurt) August 18, 2018Luckily for us, SEC Country’s Marq Burnett got video of Saban’s phenomenal use of press conference profanity.Nick Saban said Alabama can’t just “shit” more players pic.twitter.com/PjPzVku4Y2— Marq Burnett (@Marq_Burnett) August 18, 2018No team has recruited at the level of Alabama over the last four or five years, so the Tide definitely have more depth than the average team. ATLANTA, GA – SEPTEMBER 22: Head Coach Dabo Swinney of the Clemson Tigers calls a play against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on September 22, 2018 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)A couple of major college football head coaches have been named candidates for the Cleveland Browns’ job now that former head coach Hue Jackson was fired.Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley and Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell are both thought to be potential targets for the Browns’ coaching search. One NFL insider has named another top college coach a potential candidate, too.Yahoo! Sports’ NFL insider Charles Robinson has named Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney a potential option for the Browns, though he writes that it’s unlikely he’d take it.Robinson, though, does think Swinney will eventually take a shot at the NFL.Listening to some people around the NFL who know Swinney, I’m convinced he will eventually take a shot at the next level of football. His backers in the league – some of whom suggested Monday the Browns would be wise to take a big swing for him – have thought about his candidacy down to a granular level. From the potential coaching support staff that Swinney could have lined up quickly, to executives who would be willing to work with him and Dorsey, to how his offense could be tailored to maximize Baker’s growth in the NFL. That’s a lot of thought on a guy who doesn’t instantly jump to the top of most Browns coaching lists. For his part, Swinney has had an opportunity to shut down NFL talk in the past but declined to completely close the door. But one league source suggested given Swinney’s massive college football salary – nearly $9 million per season – it would likely take a Jon Gruden-type of commitment to get him locked down. As in, maybe 10 years and $100 million. Why? Well, he may be in line to replace Nick Saban at Alabama, should Saban choose to go be grumpy in some other wildly successful life pursuit. But as one league source said Monday, “Following Nick Saban’s record at Alabama is a lot harder than following [Saban’s] record in the NFL. Dabo is his own guy, too. I don’t think he’s all that interested in being a successor to anyone in college.” Added another, “He’s the guy Haslam can hire to come in and rebuild the whole culture – and they still need that.”It is easy to see Swinney succeeding at the next level, but it’s also hard to see him leaving what he’s built at Clemson – for now, anyway. The Tigers have become one of the top three programs in the country under Swinney’s leadership and he has that program rolling right now. Would he leave a chance at multiple national championships for the Browns’ head coaching job? That seems doubtful.Stay tuned.

(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)On Thursday afternoon the college football bowl season kicked off with a battle between Temple and Duke. The Owls entered today’s game against the Blue Devils without their head coach on the sidelines as Geoff Collins left the team to take the head coaching job at Georgia Tech. That left Ed Foley as the team’s interim head coach. The move hasn’t hurt the team, as the Owls currently own a 20-7 lead over Duke after grabbing tow interceptions on the day – including one returned for a touchdown.Unfortunately for the Owls, not many are in the stands to watch the game. Here was the crowd at kickoff.Opening kickoff of the 2018 Walk-On’s Independence Bowl. #CFB #BowlSeason (https://t.co/epgXy2CWvy) pic.twitter.com/bagJ2ZznA3— Empty Seats Galore (@EmptySeatsPics) December 27, 2018Ouch.Regardless of the empty stands both teams are playing hard and hoping for a win.
